Orientation week (more commonly known as O-Week), is your prime time to grab freebies, make friends, and get familiar with university life. Whether this is your first, second, or even third degree, if you just graduated high school or you’re coming in as a mature age student, if you’re a first year or if you’ve done it all before, O-Week is for everyone.
O-Week can be super overwhelming if you’ve never stepped foot onto a university campus before. So, with that being said, here is our simple guide to navigating your first (or second, or third!) orientation week.
1. Getting to O-Week
If you’re new here, you probably haven’t figured out your way around campus yet. If you haven’t got a parking permit, not to fret! Griffith Gold Coast campus has an abundance of public transport options, with not one, but two tram stops on campus! I would recommend getting off at the University Hospital stop, where you’ll be right in the middle of all the action. If you have got a parking permit, or you plan on using casual parking, you can refer to this handy map.
2. Getting your student ID
If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to get your student ID! This can score you discounts, free entry into certain “party venues” and use it around campus at certain events and in exams. Speed up the process by ordering your ID card online and picking it up at the library kiosk.
3. Join a campus tour
Campus tours are the fastest way to learn the ropes. Your tour guides will show you the library, the buildings for each school, all the best cafe’s, student accommodation, public transport, parking and all the best study spots. Don’t be overwhelmed! The tours will give you a general idea of the campus, you’ll find your way around more throughout the trimester. Tag along with a friend, or by yourself and get to know all the best spots.
4. Get your freebies!
O-Week is infamous for its freebies. Get your free o-week bag from the student guild, wander the o-week festival and stop by the stalls to pickup free energy drinks, tote bags, pens and more!
5. Make some friends
University becomes a lot less stressful when you've got some moral support by your side. You can float around club sign-on day and lookout for clubs to meet people with similar interests, try out social sports, attend events like the Rooftop Roller Disco, the Mature Age Student Breakfast and more! Mates in Minutes is a speed friending event run by the Student Guild specifically for this reason! Tag along, meet some new people and enjoy the free BBQ.
6. Join our club!
If you’re a woman in a STEM or education degree, and you haven’t already, join our club! It’s a prime opportunity to make friends, gain personal and professional development opportunities and attend our annual networking event. We have some events coming up fast, so keep an eye on our website or social media pages to stay up to date!
